چکیده
Abstract Large pelagic fishes are often broadly distributed and capable of long-distance movements. These factors can promote gene flow that makes it difficult to disentangle intra- vs. inter-specific levels genetic differentiation. Here, we assess the relationship two istiophorid billfishes, white marlin (Kajikia albida) striped (K. audax), presently considered sister species inhabiting separate ocean basins. Previous studies report differentiation between these smaller than those observed among populations other species. To determine whether comprise or a single globally species, surveyed 2520 nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 62 242 across Atlantic, Pacific, Indian oceans. Multivariate analyses resolved as distinct groups, tree composed lineages was strongly supported over lineage tree. Genetic (FST = 0.5384) also substantially larger 0.0192–0.0840), identified SNPs allow unambiguous identification. Our findings indicate which estimate diverged at approximately 2.38 Mya.

GENETIC ANALySIS OF WhITE MARLIN
The genetic basis of stock structure of white marlin (Tetrapturus albidus Poey, 1860) was inferred from analyses of five tetranucleotide repeat microsatellite loci (n = 214) and the mitochondrial (mt)DNA control region (n = 99) of white marlin from four geographic regions in the Atlantic Ocean. Considerable genetic variation was present in all collections for all molecular markers. Analysis of ...
متن کاملFishy numbers for white marlin stocks.
In 1840, the English chaplain and amateur naturalist Richard Thomas Lowe published a four-line description of a proposed new species of fish. It was a billfish: a big, fast predatory fish with a prominent bill. The billfish group includes the storied marlins immortalized by Ernest Hemingway. Lowe based his description on a single specimen collected off the coast of Madeira, Portugal, where he h...
متن کاملIsolation and characterization of 10 polymorphic microsatellite markers from striped marlin, Tetrapturus audax.
We present the isolation and characterization of 10 microsatellite loci for striped marlin, Tetrapturus audax. Thirty individuals from each of four locations revealed that all loci were polymorphic with two to 31 alleles per locus. Observed levels of heterozygosity ranged from 0.3000 to 0.9667. Significant deviations from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium were detected in two loci, TA105 in Hawaii and...

Introduction: Keriorrhoea is a benign, self-limited symptom caused by indigestible wax esters contained within some fish, often escolar (Lepidocybium flavobrunneum) or rudderfish (Centrolophus niger). Case report: A 53-years-old male patient presented, two hours after consumption of Blue Marlin (Makaira nigricans), oily orange discharge from the rectum, a condition known as keriorrhoea or gempy...
متن کاملCatch Rates for White Marlin (tetrapturus Albidus) and Blue Marlin (makaira Nigricans) from the Small-scale Fishery off La Guaira, Venezuela: Period 1991-2004
Catch rates from 1991 to 2004 for white marlin (Tetrapturus albidus) and blue marlin (Makaira nigricans) from the small scale fishery off La Guaira, Venezuela (a billfish hot-spot) were standardized by Generalized Liner Model techniques. The index of weight of fish per number of sets was estimated from dressed weight of marlins caught and reported by port sampling in the fishing community of Pl...
